Immerse yourself in Saint James’ history and know-how at its sumptuous Habitations in the heart of Sainte-Marie in Martinique.

There you will discover the Rum and Still museum and the fabulous Vintages Cellar. Take the little train through the heart of the sugar plantations bathed in sun, then go to Habitation La Salle where you will find the Rum Workshop and our cellars.

Entry to the various areas is free and unguided from 9 am to 5 pm.

Distillery

The Saint James distillery is one of the oldest places in Martinique still operating today.
Guided tours of the distillery are organised during the harvest period from March to June.

Two tours leave at: 10 am and 11.30 am from Monday to Friday, €5 / person. Contact on-site: Madame Elisabeth DEMOIRE.

The plantation train

Hop aboard our little steam train and travel into the heart of our sugar plantations.
Your trip will last 30 to 45 minutes and you will be accompanied by a guide for the whole of the 2.5 km journey.
The Little Plantation Train will take you to Habitation La Salle.

Plantations

Our plantations are a real carbon sink. The type of sugar cane we grow, C4, fixes the most carbon in Martinique. Our sugar cane is harvested near to the distillery to guarantee its freshness, and avoid unnecessary transport.
More generally, did you know that the area of sugar cane planted in Martinique absorbs over 20% per year of the CO2 produced by local cars?

Habitation La Salle

‘Habitation La Salle is a former sugar refinery founded at the end of the 17th century at Sainte-Marie in the North-East of the island which used to produce pure sugar cane juice to distil “tafia”, the ancestor of rum.

Its restoration and opening to the general public aim to showcase the epic tale of Martinique agricole rum.

The Habitation can be reached by the Plantation Train from the SAINT JAMES Distillery. It offers several areas to visit, following the historic path from sugar cane to rum: from the wooden mills used to crush the sugar cane and extract the juice to the “guildiverie” where the first rums were distilled.

This journey ends with the discovery of the Rum Workshop, an exclusive tasting* area and shop selling LA SALLE cuvées bottled using artisan methods and sealed with wax, with the possibility to personalise bottles using pyrography.

STILL MUSEUM, VINTAGES CELLAR

Our Still Museum is a not-to-be-missed part of your visit to our distillery. Here you will find plenty of fascinating relics from the period including distillation columns, stills and steam-driven machinery. In the basement, the Saint James Vintages Cellar offers an exceptional collection of vintages dating from 1885 to the present.

The museum is open from 9 am to 5 pm and entry is free.

				A faire Un musée de toute beauté 

On a dégusté différents rhums 

Le personnel est charmant courtois

Un petit sorbet local est possible après la visite c'est très rafraîchissant

				Visite au musée du rhum Superbe musée. De belles pièces de distillation. A voir. De plus l’entrée est gratuite. Pour la ballade en train c’est que le matin

				Tręs belle maison! Un voyage dans le temps dans cette belle maison crėole de maître avec ses boiseries,ses carreaux de ciment superbes,et tous ces documents sur cette belle époque de début de siècle où boire du rhum était fortement conseillé par la pub,quel changement depuis....

La salle de musée a l'arrière  superbe avec tous ses alambics et autres machines en cuivre mis en valeur avec la pierre,à voir absolument!
